Pac-Man Championship Edition DX

If there was a game that marked the childhood of many gamers was Pac-Man, Namco's classic, which now becomes the hero eater retrogaming synonymous with ghosts.

Pac-Man had several versions over the years, who does not remember Super Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and Pac-Mania? Namco continues to feed the world of games of your pet and this year was no exception. In early 2011, we saw one more title to the world of Pac-Man, this time an upgrade to Pac-Man Championship Edition which is now prefixed with the following DX Deluxe Collection Namco Generations .

In Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, Namco has brought the classic gameplay of the original Pac-Man to the present day. Pac-Man continues to eat dots and ghosts, but this time with some news. The levels are no longer static, becoming as the number of dots and ghosts that our hero is eating increases, and the speed of the game that it's awesome.

But do not think the game is so simple. When a title released for the Xbox 360 and PS3, we are constantly competing with high-scores of all players in the world. If you want to get a good score, you will need to be learning the various patterns of play in order to achieve the perfect game! As if all this were not enough, you better have your reflexes maximum because when you have 50 of your ghosts behind Pac-Man, you should not make a wrong turn on the site of the labyrinth.

Pac-Man, turn that brought new tricks up its sleeve, having pumps that can be used in limited numbers to send ghosts to the center of the maze temporarily, long enough to escape from a situation of near death. Another of the tricks of Pac-Man is able to escape in some situations using a kind of à la Matrix bullet time when ghosts are too close to him! Undoubtedly two additions to the very innovative and fun gameplay.

The game features three main modes: Score Attack in which you try to get the highest score at levels of 5 and 10 minutes, Time Attack, which consists of several levels where the player has to meet the objectives set at the beginning of each level and finally Ghost Combo consisting of levels where the player has to eat as many ghosts. For each level completed is assigned a ranking in the world according to the leaderboard as already indicated above. In total there are nine "worlds", each of which can be played with various graphic styles ranging from the version of Pac-Man to the Atari-style Pac-Mania. No doubt a very special gesture to celebrate Namco's with this game, the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man.

Finally, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX is an excellent game for any player, but above all to retrogamers and fans of Pac-Man had some longing for something new!

No doubt that is recommended by 8BR! Pac-Man Championship Edition DX can be purchased on Xbox Live and Playstation Network.

Commodore Amiga 500

I have a theory. At least once in the life of every gamer, there is a machine that deeply marks.
Spectrum, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Dreamcast, Playstation, you name it. If you are gamer, at least one system that you scored more than those others. You can not even be your favorite, but the mark is there and it is what you remember when you talk about the "old days".

The system that most struck me today is called the Commodore Amiga 500 and it was in 1989 that changed my life as a gamer.

Who lived in Portugal in the 80's, early 90's played on a PC or even a Spectrum (which was my case for some time), appeared later consoles and arcades were the delight of miudagem with its graphics and games another world, but this scenario was about to change.

The Commodore Amiga after the success of 1000 in some countries of Europe, begins to expand its market reach to Portugal and comes with some force by introducing the Amiga 500, a system with a more affordable price than the Amiga 1000 and aimed at a less technical audience.

I can tell you that the first contact I had with an Amiga 500 was the home of a cousin of mine. I boqueaberto with the first game we played, never seen anywhere with that graphics and sound quality out of a game room. Shortly after my father gave me to choose between a PC and an Amiga 286 500 ... the choice was obvious and I can tell you that I have never regretted.

I was an avid player of the Amiga throughout its lifetime, the Amiga until 1200, when as they surrounded the first problems with the Commodore and the move to Intel platforms ... but let's go back to tell you a little history of the Amiga 500.

Although the A500 is the successor to the A1000 in 1987, he is considered by many as the spiritual successor to the Commodore 64. It was this system that made the delight of many players, something that can only be repeated on a large scale with the A500, since A1000 was seen more as a machine for companies and businesses.

Powerful and versatile up to run other software, the A500 shines as gaming machine, giving rise to such gems as Speedball 2, Shadow of the Beast, Gods, Last Samurai, Turrican and Pinball Dreams.

The great rival of the A500 was the Atari 520 ST, which was very similar in hardware, but it lacked the magic of Commodore engineers, aka OCS, especially the chipset that the A500 was the monster he was:

  • Agnus - the central chip that controls access to the CPU chip RAM and 68K.
  • Denise - the main video processor system, which allowed a display resolution of 320 × 200 (NTSC) or 320X256 (PAL) may reach a brutal (for height) 640x400 using interlacing. This chip was also responsible for making the HAM (Hold and Modify), a technique that allowed display 4096 colors simultaneously on screen, something no other system was at that time.
  • Paula - the audio chip, with four channels of 8-bit independent, also controlled the IRQs and functions of input / output system, as well as ports (mouse, joystick, serial and diskette drive).

The operating system, OS Amiga was multitasking, graphical environment with a very sophisticated and powerful with a shell. All running from a single low-density diskette! 880kb! The trick was to have part of the operating system to boot from a ROM, the Kickstart ROM, hence it is possible only with the diskette boot the game without loading anything ;)

Everything about the A500 was designed so that the system could grow, had an expansion port for more RAM, ports for mouse, Joystiq, serial, parallel printer, scanner or other scanners, external disk and expansion to the second diskette drive.

The A500 was discontinued in 1991, had two direct successors, the A500 Plus, which was basically an A500 with 1 MB of internal RAM instead of 512Kb of origin of the A500 (which had many compatibility problems with some games) and the A600, a smaller model, which showed the intention of the Commodore to compete with the market for consoles already strong in 1992/93, the year it was discontinued.

This was followed by the Amiga 1200 and Amiga CD32, this last one console with the ability to expand to a 1200 (this console will speak on another occasion). Needless to say, none of the Friends that followed were so successful as the A500. The Amiga 500 was unique and remains a landmark in the history of video games and computers.

Today Amiga 500 continues to have a more active community, mainly because of the demoscene and chiptune scene. The Amiga brand was strongest objections often bought and sold after the bankruptcy of Commodore in 1994, but there is still a glimmer of hope that a new friend is born from the ashes :)

As for me, I can tell you that I left for my A500 to a 486 DX2 66MHZ with a multimedia kit in 1994 and still regret having sold : (

Trivia
Did you know that an error that appeared when the Amiga crash, called Guru Meditation , originated from a joke made by the engineers at Commodore? One of the initial products of the Commodore was called Joyboard and was a device similar to a joystick but controlled with your feet, gender Wii Balance Board. Early in the development of the Amiga, developers became so frustrated with the frequent crahses the system to relax, have created a game for the Joyboard in which the player last longer in a position of guru india (sitting cross-legged) gained, but if moved, lost and the game showed an error message "Guru Meditation".
