As such, starting today, I will have a weekly article in "The Arcade", making the company a small but talented group of veterans of the gaming scene in Portugal.

Without lifting the veil over in these parts, I invite you to visit the " The Arcade ".

Prince.exe

That's how many of us found Prince of Persia, the name of the executable on the PC that took us to a world of thousand and one nights. In 60 minutes we had to escape a huge dungeon and rescue the princess from the hands of the evil Jaffar. It seems basic, but in 1990 we did not care too much about it because PoP innovated in other areas such as animation, music and building levels.

How many games at the time, Prince of Persia is the work of just one programmer, Jordan Mechner , who already had given us the excellent Karateka, published by Brøderbund Software.

Contrary to what many think, Prince of Persia does not originally appeared on PC, but the Apple II in 1989, only in 1990 would be ported to PC, Amiga, Atari ST and Amstrad CPC. The success was enormous in the years following the game was ported to most consoles and computers of the time, giving room for improvement in terms of graphics and sound in some of the platforms.

Prince of Persia was entitled to a sequel, Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow & The Flame and more recently gave rise to a new series of video games in 3D, published by Ubisoft, and a Hollywood movie and several Graphic Novels, making again a name recognized by gamers (and beyond), but the origin remains unknown in part by later generations of players.

Today we return to play Prince of Persia easily, I think the original game is already considered Abandonware, but if you want to play on consoles, there are always remakes the Xbox 360 and PS3.

As for Jordan Mechner, he continues in the business of video games as indie developer, and recently put a post on his blog that claims to have recovered the "long lost" source code of the original Prince of Persia for Apple II :)

For fans of Prince of Persia also recommend the book " The Making of Prince of Persia , "a collection of stories taken from the diary of Jordan during the period in which the first scheduled game.

As we are about here at 8BR Porreiras, we have a copy of the book in electronic format to offer simply by leaving a comment saying what they liked most in the original Prince of Persia! The result of the contest will be announced next Sunday the fourth book and sent to the email address you use in your comment.

Until then, good luck and play PoP to remember!

Trivia

Did you know that there are unofficial ports of Prince of Persia for ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 made from memory dumps of the original Prince of Persia the Apple II? As we only recently found the original source, the best way that fans arranged to make the port was doing reverse engineering the memory dump of the game.

Game On Lisbon - Exhibition of Video Games

Is taking place since last March 22 until July 15 at the Museum of Popular Art in Lisbon, the Game On exhibition, devoted to the history of video games.

The Game On presents a retrospective of video games of the century. XX and XXI, from the first electronic machines developed in the laboratories of colleges in 60 years, through the arcade machines like Asteroids, Pac-Man and Space Invaders, to the current generation of consoles, allowing visitors to play and experience the various machines, consoles, computers and games on display.

The 8BR visited Game On, but unfortunately we could not take pictures due to some technical problems.

The exhibition is arranged chronologically, that is, we begin by older games to reach the current generation of consoles. The highlights of the exhibition are undoubtedly the arcade original, well maintained and restored we can try without a currency ;) .

The luxury of playing Puckman, the original Japanese before being changed to Pac-Man (for obvious reasons), is undoubtedly priceless, as well as the Asteroids arcade game despite playing only do you get to see how clever was the use of electronics and CRT screen, you will only find differences when comparing this document with the game on another platform.

Along the way find consoles and computers from the golden age of video games. Since the Famicom to the Sega Dreamcast, the Spectrum to the Amiga via the MSX, everyone is there waiting to be tried, always with a game running.

Other gems of the exhibition are several pieces of artwork for video games or the creators themselves, as the drawings of the Super Mario and Donkey Kong signed by Shigeru Miyamoto, the sketches of Yuji Naka and Sonic the icing on the cake: Secret of the original concept artwork of Monkey Island, which also is exposed to play.

The Secret of Monkey Island: LeChuck concept artwork and Monkeys

The Secret of Monkey Island: Guybrush Threepwood concept artwork

As hardcore fans of retro games, experávamos more of this exposure, especially in the area of the arcades that could have more variety, since they have been many games that marked an entire era that were left out, like Street Fighter II and other iconic titles, but we understand that the estate of the exhibition is not so extensive.

Do not misunderstand us, exposure is excellent for younger or for those who want to remember some of the games of his childhood, but for the true retro gamers know little.

The entrance to the Game On costs € 9 and can be purchased a ticket for € 5 after the first visit if they want to return to the exhibition. It is certainly recommended to EVERYONE, even the most demanding retro gamers, even if it is to play those precious original arcade!

Another World - 20th Anniversary Edition

In 1991, the heyday of the Amiga, Eric Chahi by Delphine Software, gives us his vision of an alien world, putting us in the role of Lester Knight Chaykin, booked a physicist who embarks on an adventure unexpectedly after an incident with the their experience in a particle accelerator.

I think not stray too far from the truth if I say that most of us, gamers, played at least once in their life to Another World, or Out Of This World is known as the American continent. Another World was so bombastic when it appeared that no one was indifferent. The dreamlike atmosphere of the game combined with an animation unlike anything that had been done up there, gave us an almost cinematic experience unlike what was the norm back then.

Due to the huge success it had, after being originally released on the Commodore Amiga, then was released for the PC, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Sega Mega CD, Mac and 3DO.

The result of "one-man-show" Another World is a game that 20 years later can be a milestone in the history of video games and having perfectly aged and old can attract new gamers with its re-edits for platforms more current.

Five years ago, Eric Chahi released a collector's edition for Windows, which contained in addition to a remastered edition with high resolution graphics, the game's soundtrack, a making-of video of 20min and daily scans of game development , a real sweet to the fans. Although no longer on sale in physical format, you can purchase this excellent edition in digital format by the GOG or the DotEmu .

Today, the most recent edition is for iOS and Android platforms, edited by DotEmu .

Despite not having all the extras of the collector's edition, these versions have some new features like the ability to switch between the SD and HD with a simple swipe on the screen, achievements, automatic save points and a remastered soundtrack and effects.

In short, two excellent editions to remember or even know about this fabulous classic from the golden age of video games!
