The Secret of Monkey Island Demo

The Secret Of Monkey Island is indeed a milestone in the history of video games. Personally one of my graphic adventures of the election, is at the top along with Monkey Island 2 and will be very difficult to change ideals, especially when it's been 21 years :)

I have finished the game probably more than 20 times, playing it almost every year and when this happens we begin to know the game to another level. Yesterday I returned to pick up on Monkey Island, the nostalgia hit hard after reading this excellent article in Cosmic Effect, but this time returned to his roots. Instead of playing the PC version VGA decided to go to the original EGA version (note that I played Monkey Island 1 for the first time on the Amiga 500 and would not return to play the CD-ROM version in VGA PC some time later .) I launched the ScummVM and loaded the EGA version, the graphics quality is much lower, but it is funny to compare the differences.

I can tell you that I was quite surprised in the first minutes of play. When Guybrush arrives at the pier before the Scumm Bar and sees, not the moon in the starry sky, but a late afternoon with a sunset together as the night ... I was impressed :) It was at this point I decided to do a kind of "digital archeology" and dig up the rest of the versions. Only the version is that EGA and Atari have this sunset, in the other versions that were released later, this scenario has been corrected to reflect the night that was already present in the presentation of the game. Apparently this type of change was very frequent in Luke Games / Lucas Arts during the period of graphic adventures, small parts of the games were being upgraded as new versions were developed for several platforms at the time as the Amiga, FM Towns and Mac ...

I remembered then Amiga Format magazine that I had when I was younger, who had a demo of Secret of Monkey Island and with a quick Google search found it, along with the demo for PC, EGA :) I can tell you that the demo is very short but very interesting to play mainly to compare with the full game. I challenge you to go get the ScummVM and play this demo, you will see who will not repent.

Amiga Demo

EGA PC Demo

As you can see just by these pictures, the differences are already enough :) The sunset was until the final version of EGA!

You can download ScummVM and download the demo directly from 8BR, here . To play, simply unzip the zip file, copy the folders to your ScummVM games folder and add the game in the emulator that will recognize the demos.

For a bit of history at the time, see the README files MONKEY.TXT and inside the folder DOS :)

I await your comments!

  • Fabulous, Odrakir! Wow, you play Monkey every year, that is healthy habit! : D

Dude, fantastic you have returned to the EGA version and have found these differences. Wow, the bid of the setting sun instead of the night, amazing! You want to go to the end in the EGA version? It would be really cool other posts with the differences that are found along the way.

    Big hug!

  • @ Cosmonal: Yes, I will until the end of the EGA version, but I do not think you find many more differences. Where can the many differences in graphs is the same between the demo and final game, which is absolutely normal. Here is the curious to see how the game's development has evolved. But yes, if you find something very different from EGA to VGA version I put here ;)

Ever played the demo of MI1? I think you'll like it!

    Hug!

  • Really cool post, Odrakir! Interesting comparison between the versions.

I identified a bit with your story, because I finished the first Phantasy Star dozens of times. Never lose your grace. And indeed, we come to know the game differently.
